12/13/2023 0 Comments Wood skim boardWhen skimboarding, you don’t go very deep into the water, so it’s an activity that kids can enjoy before they’re advanced swimmers. The basic techniques are relatively easy to master and you don’t have to be a proficient swimmer to be able to skimboard. Skimboarding is great for kids age 6 years old and up. Our beaches on the West Coast can get chilly in the fall and winter, but often we can still skimboard in the off-season. My kids have even gone skimboarding while wearing a sweatshirt! I wouldn’t necessarily recommend that, but it can be done. Once you have the hang of it, you can skimboard without even getting very wet. You can skimboard on a cold day and not get completely soaked or frozen. Skimboarding doesn’t require you to submerge yourself in the water like surfing or swimming. Skimboarding is a great introduction to spending time in the ocean. They will feel the pull of the ocean and understand better how strong the water can be, while remaining safe. Skimboarding is a great way to allow your kids to get a feel for the waves and how they break while still being able to touch the ground and stay close to the shore. You can get a feel for the ocean without getting all the way in. Skimboarding allows you to stay right at the shoreline. For anyone not comfortable with waves and surf, skimboarding is the perfect introduction to help your child (and the parent) get more comfortable with the water and confident in their skills. Skimboarding is a good introduction to the ocean for any kids (or parents) who might be apprehensive about surfing or swimming in the waves. Skimboarding gets kids familiar with the ocean Plus, storage is less of an issue with a smaller board, and they’re more affordable. However, skimboards are much more manageable for parents (and kids) to bring to the beach. When carrying, I have to constantly readjust the surfboard and try to find a way to make it comfortable. Have you ever tried carrying a surfboard from the car to the waves? It is not easy! Surfboards are large and heavy (and expensive). Size of the skimboard is manageableĪ skimboard is small and easy to carry. 5 reasons to let your kids try skimboarding 1. Skimboarding happens in shallow water on the water’s edge, so there’s no need to go out into the water and wait for a wave, as you would when surfing. Skimboards are much smaller and thinner than surfboards, and they do not have any fins. Skimboarding is a water sport, similar to surfing, where you can skid or slide across the surface of the water close to the shore on a small flat board. Skimboarding is a great way for kids to stay close to the shore in shallow water but still have fun. And then, when you get to the beach, your kids are either nervous of the water and afraid of the loud waves crashing on the shore or so interested they can’t stay out of them! And in the latter case, maybe it’s you that’s nervous about sending them out into the deep blue.Įither way, if you want to find a happy medium where your kids can play in the water but not be way out in the depths of the ocean, the solution you’re looking for is a skimboard. Now, a trip to the beach means you’re schlepping shovels, buckets, towels, sunscreen, chairs, snacks, water bottles, an umbrella, and so much more through the hot sand. Going to the beach as a parent is a far cry from the days when all you needed was a towel and a good book. She’ll walk you through the benefits of skimboarding for kids, how to skimboard, tips for choosing the right skimboard for kids, and so much more! This post will make you want to get to the beach as soon as possible! It’s a safe way to introduce your kids to the ocean, challenge their abilities, boost their confidence, and let them have fun! Today, Wendy Cox, photographer and California mom of four, is here sharing everything you need to know to get started skimboarding with kids. Skimboarding is gaining in popularity, and for a good reason. Skimboarding is a fun, active, and affordable way to keep your kids entertained on the beach.

Nothing is too much - your character has exactly as many pairs of underwear as fit the drawer, and she doesn't lug around any awkward presents or empty cardboard boxes she needs to keep for the next move or until an item's warranty expires. As I agonised over putting a poster on the living room wall that clearly went against the décor of the whole place, I realised how much about a person, and the harmony of a household, Unpacking managed to visibly telegraph.īut in order to make unpacking a pleasant activity and not a chore, Unpacking mostly designs lives that go against the quirks capitalism instilled in us. Without words, Unpacking managed to make one of her moves seem like a really bad idea, the furniture suggesting an inhabitant remarkably different in style from her, their furniture clearly not designed to accommodate more than one person's belongings. Several moves concern not just your mystery woman's stuff, but also the way she eventually slots into another life by moving in with other people. Generally, there are a lot of films and books to stack, but some items are so distinct that they immediately denote a large life change - one item in particular hints at a possible disability, and I spent a good while wondering if I was simply reading the wrong thing into it. There are DVDs and eventually blu-rays, rendered distinctly enough to make it fun to recognise the film by the cover alone. Across several moves, you unpack Nintendo consoles, and I cheered to see each of them appear without the previous console being abandoned. The continuity that comes from unpacking the same items, or seeing an item being replaced also adds a lot of charm - the first time you unearth a purple D20 from the woman's moving boxes, you also eventually find a t-shirt with the die on it, clearly communicating this person's newfound love for tabletop roleplaying. Without wanting to be too materialistic about it, the items in Unpacking make a house a home. While the music is nice, I eventually turned it off, both because it loops several times before you're likely to be done, and because I wanted to enjoy the noises of things finding their place, together with the sounds of the world around you, like the upstairs neighbour thumping across the floor above you, or a plane streaking across the sky above your roof. Finding just the right spot for an item feels great, not only because everything you pick up looks beautiful thanks to Unpacking's charming pixel art, but also because the foley design is spot on - the clanking of stacked dishes, the hollow sound of a ukulele's body as you slot it into its holder. Unpacking's admittedly few limits are in place in order to keep things neat, and the neatness is what makes it all so satisfying. On the Switch in handheld mode, the view is automatically zoomed in a bit, as things get too small for you to have the whole room on display and still effectively work, but that's the only niggle with that particular version of Unpacking. You can open drawers, hang clothes hangers and stack some items, and it only ever gets fiddly if you've already stacked things close together and try to separate them again. Witch Beam warns that this removes the puzzle element, but Unpacking is really just a puzzle in the way life's limited spaces are, the way you tetris all of your pans into the cupboard just so and the sock drawer in real life likely has to hold more socks than it was designed to. Unpacking's trailer gives you a taste of the zen. Where you place items is largely up to you - Unpacking has a few rules and is fairly strict about you just dumping things on the floor, but you're given plenty of freedom, and if you don't like that the magnetic whiteboard absolutely has to go on the fridge, you can even activate an accessibility setting that lets you put stuff wherever. Each move starts with boxes, neatly stacked in a random room, inviting you to just pull things out and find a place for them. Unpacking follows a woman across 6 formative moves over a timespan of roughly twenty years, starting with her childhood bedroom.
12/13/2023 0 Comments Black bird songIndeed, not just the song as the Blackbird is surely the species we associate most closely with our gardens. Next up, the Blackbird, whose song is perhaps more familiar to us than any other. The satisfaction to be gained from identifying birds by song (and calls) really can't be overemphasised - it's truly a window into another world. The complexities of bird song may not be easy to get to grips with, but why not take the time to learn. Enjoy the chorus as it widens, as Wren, Starling, Chaffinch and Dunnock join in. As you wake in the morning, during these times of increased isolation, take a moment to notice the birds who break the morning silence, the Robin, the Blackbird and perhaps the Song Thrush. This serves not only to attract a mate but also to deter rivals. Each day, prior to the sun's appearance above the horizon, birds begin to advertise their presence, demonstrating their strength and ability in song. Similar conservation actions to try to improve habitats in these areas would be prudent, but further research is needed before specific targeted actions for Blackbird can be proposed. In this series of blogs I'm going to be exploring the wonderful world of bird song (with calls thrown in for good measure!) There's surely little more calming to human ears than the annual serenade of spring song. Much of the population of this species lives in woodland and urban areas, where declines have also occurred. 2017), and therefore policies that encourage damper soil may benefit Blackbirds, e.g. During the breeding season, soil moisture can affect breeding success ( Miller et al. As Blackbird is a partial migrant, local conservation actions to support birds in winter will not necessarily benefit local populations, and changes over a large scale may hence be required in order for conservation actions to have a significant effect on British (and European) populations. wild bird seed or cover mixtures, set-aside or grass buffer strips/margins. These could include providing supplementary food over winter, managing hedgerows or woodland habitat for wildlife, and providing additional habitat, e.g. Blackbird numbers did increase from the late 1990s until around 2010, suggesting that the earlier issues may no longer be occurring, but these increases have stalled and numbers remain substantially lower than in the late 1960s.ĭecreases in farmland may relate to agricultural intensification, where conservation actions to support other species may also benefit Blackbird, particularly those that could aid survival as this is suspected to be the main cause of the decline. The causes of the decline from the 1970s to the mid-1990s are uncertain and hence it is also unclear which conservation actions will be most likely to help reverse the declines. Analysis of nest record data suggests that different factors may affect nest survival in urban and countryside habitats, and that nest productivity is higher in intermediate (urban rural) habitats ( Miller et al. 1995) but, since numbers fell in woodland as well as farmland, additional factors probably operated. Agricultural intensification is likely to have contributed to the population decline ( Fuller et al. Fledgling numbers per breeding attempt increased during the population decline and are now decreasing again, suggesting that productivity is density-dependent. Subsequent demographic analysis of national data indicates that annual population changes actually correlate best with adult survival, although population processes appear to differ between eastern and western Britain ( Robinson et al. However, the 2010 study covered a small geographical area and the survival rates from this area may not be representative of the whole of the UK. 2010a) the survival rates found by this study were similar to those found by an earlier study in the 1970s ( Batten 1978). Adult survival in an intensive colour-ringing study was lowest in the spring during the early breeding season and highest during the autumn ( Robinson et al. 1998a), although there has been little overall change in survival as recorded by CES since 1983. It is likely that reduced survival drove the decline ( Siriwardena et al. Agricultural intensification may have contributed to the decline in farmland, but other factors probably operated in woodland and urban habitats.ĬBC results show that the decline began in the mid 1970s. The causes of change are uncertain although it is likely that reduced survival drove the initial declines. 12/13/2023 0 Comments Everblue 2 bulletin boardI went back inside and carried my luggage to the upstairs bedroom where I found a live hornet crawling on the floor. Guys, Ive run out of ideas of what might be wrong. It has 54 digital I/O pins in which you can attach a lot of sensors, drivers, and other modules. Taking a look at the Arduino Uno, this most popular of boards are powered by the ATMega328 while for the Mega2560, its name connotes the microcontroller that powers it the ATMega2560. Other than that - you make some very valid points. The Arduino Mega is the big brother of the Arduino Uno. Although this can be a bit of a trap, as you will likely use each pin individually, instead of learning to engineer your way out of a pickle (find ways to multiplex output on a few pins to drive say a few 7-segment displays, instead of driving each segment off its own pin). The Mega is a bit overkill for pretty much any beginner project, but can come in handy when first getting into making complex projects. This is the spare op-amp that was unused on previous boards. The revision 3 board buffers this LED/resistor through a unity gain op-amp. This way if you cook the processor you can somewhat easily replace it (you'd need to flash the bootloader to it first, but that's a different story altogether). The Arduino Uno and Arduino Uno revision 2 both have a LED and resistor connected in series on Arduino pin 13. Yes, you can expand the number of I/O pins on the Uno with shift registers and "pin expanders" and blah blah blah, but getting more memory is not feasible.Īll this being said - I'd go with the Uno R3, with the DIP package. These are somewhat moot points when starting out, but they are valid nonetheless. Also has substantially more storage capacity for your program. It's definitely capable of handling more I/O than the Uno. I would correct the "more capable" statement. 12/13/2023 0 Comments Echo trimmer dealers near meECHO trimmers are pro-grade equipment for both homeowners and professionals.
